How do the ants go marching again?
Its been so long since the ants went marching in my world that I'm not even sure how they marched anymore. The tune came to me today while cleaning up Aiden's crumbs from lunch. I started singing it to him but I'm pretty sure I bumbled the words. So I'll write what I sang below and then I'll give whoever comments with the right words a virtual high five.

The Ants Go Marching
as interpreted by Muffy, the musically challenged

The ants go marching one by one
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching one by one
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, the little one stops to chew some gum
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching two by two
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching two by two
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching two by two, the little one stops to tie his shoe
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching three by three
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching three by three
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching three by three, the little one stops to take a pee
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching four by four
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching four by four
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching four by four, the little one stops to shut the door
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching five by five
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching five by five
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching five by five, the little one stops to kick a hive
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching six by six
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching six by six
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching six by six, the little one stops to pick up sticks
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching seven by seven
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching seven by seven
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching seven by seven, the little one stops to go to heaven
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching eight by eight
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching eight by eight
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching eight by eight, the little one stops to close the gate
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching nine by nine
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching nine by nine
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching nine by nine, the little one stops to swing from a vine
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

The ants go marching ten by ten
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten
hurrah hurrah
The ants go marching ten by ten, the whole thing starts all over again
and they all go marching down under the ground to get out of the rain
BUM! BUM! BUM!

According to my husband it's:

one by one -- suck his thumb
two -- tie his shoe
three -- climb a tree
four -- shut the door
five -- do a jive
six -- pick up sticks
seven -- go to heaven
eight -- stops to shut the gate
nine -- pick up a dime
ten -- d it all again

I have been singing this song to my 14 month old son for so long I have ~4 different lyrics for every number. I learned it from my Finnish stepmother's Girl Scout song book when i was about 13. depending on the choice of lyric it can be a touching ballad -little one get sick[six] and 'goes to heaven'[seven] only to climb over the gate[eight]... or the classic silly song

some options: [a few of these require you to sing 'they' instead of 'the little one']
one
-fell behind and had to run
-stoped to sctach his bum
-wore a hat to keep out of the sun

two
-climbed over my shoe
-nvm... um.. it's about poo

Three
rode on the back of a honey bee
hurried to be home for tea

four
-crawled under the cellar door
-ate until he could't anymore
-got caught in the thunder storm

five
-had never been so sick in his life
-walked because ants can't drive
-was just happy to be alive
-wanted to wait for a bus to arrive

Six
-crossed the ditch on a popsicle stick
-tried to keep up on a pogo stick
-made a fire of tiney sticks
[pretty much any stick line]

seven
walked all the way up to heaven
marched from 6 to 4 past 11
walked from here to 7-11
found a ticket to get into heaven
Died and was carried away to heaven

eight
jumped over the garden gate
hurried because he was late
fell on the ice cause he couldn't skate
snuck back over the Pearly Gate

Nine
formed a conga line
arrived just in Time
walked together in perfect time
Walked at the head of the line
Ten
if you want to hear more i'll just sing it again

ok that was probably too long an answer
